Embed a Microsoft Stream Video
Microsoft Stream offers an embed code sharing option. You must manage permissions before using an embed code and viewers must be part of the UIW community to watch. This guide explains this two-part requirement to create an embed code that works.
Are you embedding a video in Canvas? The OneDrive app in Canvas, is the simplest solution to link or embed your Stream videos in a Canvas course. We recommend it to avoid the work of managing permissions described in this guide.
Stream Embed Considerations
- Embed codes require more steps than making a sharing link.
- Embed codes only play if permissions are assigned to the viewers.
- Viewers must sign in with their UIW email to watch.
- The public is unable to watch Stream videos.
Requirement 1: Assign Video Permissions
Step 1: Open Manage Access
Embed codes only work for users who have permission to access the file. Before using an embed code, select the Share button, then click Manage access.

Step 2: Open Grant Access
Only the users and groups listed in the People and Groups areas can view a video shared with the embed code. This includes users and groups with access to the Teams, SharePoint, or OneDrive folder the file is stored in, and anyone with direct access to the video file. To grant access to additional users or groups, then click the Grant Access icon in the upper right.

Step 3: Add People or Groups
Add individual people and groups, adjust ability to edit and download, uncheck Notify people, and click Grant access. Note, you can share to the group Everyone except external users to give access to everyone at UIW. Ensure you uncheck "Notify people" if you use this permission.

Requirement 2: Use the Embed Code
Step 1: Open the Embed Menu
After your permissions are set up correctly, open the Share button to open the drop-down menu, then click Embed code.

Step 2: Customize Embed Options
Choose your embed options:
-
Start from: Optionally enter a time code HH:MM:SS where playback will begin.
-
Player size: Adjust the dimensions of the video player appearance.
-
Autoplay: When this is turned off, the viewer must click Play to start playback.
-
Responsive: Allows the video player to automatically resize to fit the screen or container.
-
Show title: Displays the video/audio title on the player.

Step 3: Copy Embed Code
Click Copy embed code and paste it in the location your viewers will watch the video.

Embed Stream Videos FAQ
I would like to embed my video into Canvas. How can I do that?We recommend using the integrated OneDrive app in Canvas to embed videos in Canvas. This method offers several benefits:
- Videos have no expiration date.
- Embedded content supports course copy.
- Videos are not downloadable.
- Only course participants can view embedded content.
If I move my video, do I have to embed it again? It depends on where the video is moved:
-
Same site: If the video stays within the same OneDrive or SharePoint site, you do not have to re-embed it.
-
Different site: If the video moves to a different OneDrive or SharePoint site, you do have to re-embed it.
My viewers see a "You don't have access" error. Why?This usually means the viewer isn’t signed in or lacks permission to access the video. Double-check your video permissions. If permissions are correct, advise viewers to clear their browser history, log in to Cardinal Apps, and try again.
