Principle 4: Descriptive Text for Links
Use Descriptive Text for Links in Canvas
The Canvas RCE (Rich Content Editor) allows you to create descriptive text links easily. Follow these steps to create a descriptive text link in the Canvas RCE:
- Log in to your Canvas account and navigate to the course, page, or assignment where you want to add the descriptive text link.
- Click on the "Edit" button to enable the Rich Content Editor.
3. In the text box, type the descriptive text that you want to use as the link. This should be a concise and clear description of the linked content.
4. Highlight the text you just typed by clicking and dragging your cursor over it.
5. Look for the "Link" icon in the toolbar. It looks like a chain link. Click on this icon to open the "Insert Link" menu.
6. In the "External Link" field, paste the URL of the web page you want to link to. Make sure it starts with "http://" or "https://".
Click the "Done" button to insert the link into your text. You will see that the link is live because the text will be red and underlined.
Review your new descriptive text link to ensure it looks and functions as intended.
Click the "Save" or "Save and Publish" button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.
Now you've successfully created a descriptive text link in the Canvas RCE. Students or other users will be able to click on the link to access the content you've linked to.
