LockDown Browser Overview
LockDown Browser (LDB) is an exam security tool to prevent students from browsing the web, printing, copying, or opening other applications when taking a Canvas quiz. Instructors also have the Monitor and Live Proctoring features available when additional security is needed. Monitor requires students to turn on a webcam and record their movements while testing. Monitor also offers a screen recording option to record students' testing process. Instructor Live Proctoring is used with Microsoft Teams for instructors to monitor students' webcams in real-time. LockDown Browser Availability LDB is available for instructors to enable with Canvas Quizzes in all Canvas courses. Add Lockdown Browser to your Canvas course menu. Create Canvas Quizzes you want to enable LDB for. From the LDB tool, enable settings for any quiz built in your course. Monitor and live proctoring are optional after you enable LDB for a quiz. Respondus tech support is available for instructors and students. LockDown Browser Considerations Standard alphanumeric characters are required for all Canvas Quizzes titles to avoid errors with using LDB. Do not use text icons or special characters when naming your Canvas quizzes. Instructors must select various settings based on their expectations during testing, including password protection, iPad use, approved websites to visit during testing, calculator access, and printing. Instructors can choose automated proctoring with the Monitor feature to record students during the testing experience. Instructors can also require students to record their screen while testing. Monitor sensitivity levels allow instructors to customize the reporting of testing behaviors. To remotely watch up to 25 students via MS Teams, select Instructor Live Proctoring. Canvas currently has two quiz types, Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes, which impact LDB differently. Canvas Course Copy for Classic Quizzes transfers with the settings intact, but New Quizzes require manual setup of LDB settings for each exam every time you copy.
